Beach Day

I love the peace that can be felt in nature, especially immense places like Lake Michigan.  It's beautiful.  I could have stayed until the sun went down.  Maybe sometime we will. Trips in years past: 2009  2008

Have you seen this???

I can't wait until my store is available.

Oh-and I should be at the beach right now!
It's beach day!

The Fair

My incredibly patient family, waiting for the demo derby to start!  Last year, I was shocked at how full the stands were so we made sure to get there early.  Really early. ;)

I may be part hillbilly, but I really like the colors of the cars and watching them smash into each other.  There were two minor fires to be put out and the firefighters had to cut off the hood of a car.  It was awesome.

Lucy's favorite part was the pigs.
Daddy's favorite part was seeing the parking lot on the way out (going home).

My favorite part (aside from the demo derby) was being with these guys:

Cleaning and Organizing

This past weekend we shipped Lucy off to Grammi and Grandpa's and took the opportunity to clean and organize the apartment and get some much needed projects done.

Here's what we did:

  • Cleaned out Lucy's closet which is also a storage closet and reorganized all the "stuff" in there.
  • Fixed the lamp in Lucy's room.
  • Took out the kitchen and baby bed-which we passed on to Lizzie.
  • Brought up the table and chairs for her room.
  • Patched holes, sanded and painted the dining room.
  • Took down the evil vertical blinds and put up curtains in the dining room and "master" bedroom.
  • Hung mirrors in the dining room.
  • Cleaned out and organized the front storage closet.
  • Built storage for the bikes out on the balcony.  NO MORE BIKES IN THE DINING ROOM!
  • Put storage cubes in the entertainment center to contain library books, dvds, games, and FHE stuff.
  • I cleaned out my desk area and put in some plastic drawers to contain all our paper, office supplies and my crafting/art stuff.
  • I cleaned out the filing cabinet!
  • Took down the shower doors and put up a rod and curtain.
  • Replaced the rug in the bathroom.
  • Cleaned out and reorganized the basement storage-and we remembered to label all the tubs this time! :
  • Printed and hung photos for the living room.

There were probably some little things I missed, but that's most of the big stuff.
It was tiring but fun.  Luckily we were able to find a lot of things we had planned on buying, like painting supplies, the tarp for the bike storage and some other odds and ends.  We did buy some things at Lowes-like chain for the bikes and the hooks for hanging on brick.  We mostly shopped at Ikea for the curtains and storage cubes.  WE LOVE IKEA.  It's so nice to have things put away and much better organized.  It was nice working on projects with Tony and getting to spend some one-on-one time.  We can be neglectful of that and it was nice to reconnect and work together and work through things together.

For the pictures I had printed, I went to Meijer with a flash drive-which I had never done before.  I used their HP photo kiosk.  I loved it and will probably do all of this type of printing there.  I liked it because I could choose where the photos were cropped on the screen.  In the past I have uploaded them to CVS or Walgreens and they choose where to crop and they don't always choose the best spot.  I think these turned out really well.

I didn't take many pictures (!) I know-but I was too busy working.  Here are a few:

Family Reunion

I love visiting with my aunts, I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of Aunt Diane or Aunt Pat and Aunt Linda wasn't there-offer up a few prayers for her and her family.  They are such fun women and have such a positive outlook on life and strong faith in a loving God.  I'm happy to have their examples in my life.

Enjoy this funny video of Lucy.

National S'more Day!

I didn't know there was such a thing until this morning.  You can read about the history here.  This is the creation Lucy and I came up with using Golden Grahams, mini-marshmallows and chocolate chips.  I resisted the urge to dip the whole thing in chocolate.

Sometimes fun ideas happen before hair is done or breakfast is cleaned up...those are the best days.

My first quilt

I've been dreaming of quilting for a long time-especially around Music in the Park time when I see all these heirlooms brought out to sit on in the grass.  I made some mini quilts for practice last year and this year graduated to a baby size for my nephew, Miles.  I wanted something eye-catching and when I saw the dots I decided every square should be dots...I have a thing for dots and stripes.  I learned a lot of valuable lessons on this quilt and am excited to do another-maybe this fall.  I also have a bucket of high school t-shirts begging to be pulled out of storage and made into something so maybe that will be next.

There was a photo booth at Tony's work party.  I want one for my birthday party...or my living room.

<-------------could my mouth be any bigger?

Here's to the next 10.

cat what?

Even though she likes fish, Lucy's not so sure about this one.  To be honest, neither was I.

Fuzzy caterpillars, however are acceptable.

THE best zucchini

Thank goodness for our garden.  Some day, I'm going to have a gigantic garden filled with all sorts of yummy fruits and vegetables and I'm going to have a little table out front for all the extra stuff-just like my grandparents did.  For now, we have a smallish garden at Jen's and we have had some bohemoth zucchinis.  I know you're supposed to pick them sooner, but sometimes those babies just get hidden under all those giant prickly leaves and they grow like we live next to a nuclear reactor.  It's great for me because that means more grilled** (broiled) zucchini.  This recipe comes from my father-in-law...he made it for us a couple summers ago and man, I couldn't get enough.  It works with summer squash too, but for some reason the zucchini seems to have been made for Italian food.

Slice your zucchini long ways, brush both sides with EVOO (did I just say that?!) sprinkle with dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder and a little kosher salt.  Let it broil until they begin to brown, then turn and let the other side brown a bit. Seriously-yum.

**You can do this on the grill but I have something against preparing food outside.  I don't mind if other people do it for me, I mean, I'll eat what comes off the grill and even reluctantly, what comes out of a dutch oven, I just shouldn't be in charge of fire or coals.

Placemat scripture tote.

Thinking about making these with the YW.
If you were a 12-18 year old girl, you'd want one, right?

must. have.

I must have this.
 It's by Hayley & Lucas
(who have nothing to do with OTH)
and I found it

I'd like to decorate my whole kitchen around it...I love it so much, heck, maybe even the whole apartment.
